David & Meredith - North Raleigh Wildflower Couple Session - Mirrorless vs DSLR

Having David in front of my camera was definitely a new dynamic for the two of us. When David first started photography he had sent me an email asking if he could shadow me and try to learn from me and while I had received various emails like this I was humbled by how kind and thoughtful he had been in the email that I said yes. Fast forward we were working together almost every other weekend for about a year and half until he got comfortable and successful enough on his own with his brand to not need second shooting anymore. Of course I had the pleasure of learning about his girlfriend Meredith.

They aren’t engaged yet….. but I still asked if they would be willing to get in front of my camera because I wanted a chance to test out my Nikon Z5 that had been literally collecting dust in my basement (like I had to actually wipe the dust off before using it) I had bought the camera awhile ago in hopes of having a lightweight travel camera but lets be real when I do take vacations the last thing I want is to tote a camera around so I never used it. I also wasn’t sold with it. The colors always felt off and the images didn’t feel as crisp as the images from my 750. But then my friend told me about the adapters and I ordered one so that I could use my prime lenses with the camera. And that changed everything. I also wanted to test it out before bringing it with me to Costa Rica (I had been recently using my 750’s so much that the shutters were going really slow or dying all together so I wanted to see what the mirrorless could offer with fast shutter speeds and not having to worry about it breaking and killing my session)

Overall I still think that the back end of the images with the 750 provide me with a better color profile. After talking to my friend who shoots mirrorless for video I think that maybe the images just have too much information and they sort of make my presets obsolete. The back of camera images look perfect but editing has taken me a little longer than usual, perhaps this is a learning curve but maybe it’s just the way the images are. Either way I think the z5 is going to be my go to camera for mini sessions and other everyday shoots I have laving my 750 workhorses for wedding days.

Let me know if you have mirrorless or DSLR and which you prefer.
