Chic Engagement in Uptown Charlotte with Anna & Jack

Don’t overthink your engagement session.

It really can be as simple as showing up downtown, walking around sipping on iced coffee and contemplating whether or not you should buy the hot dog. Anna & Jack kept it chill, as we explored Downtown Charlotte (after I had just spent about 18 hours sleeping on the sidewalk down there for the 1975 show) but this was really my first time walking around and exploring it.

As a Raleigh wedding photographer I don’t spend a lot of time in the queen city, and wow this city is way different than downtown Raleigh, I felt as if I had my creative hat on, and tried to channel my inner NYC photographer. I wanted it to really feel as if they were in a bustling metropolis.

We stopped by the hot dog cart, went to the “mall” and strolled through the park for their intimate and fun engagement session. These two are tying the knot in October of next year and I can’t wait to spend more time with them and see the fun that they’ll come up with on their special day.

Keeping Your Engagement Session Casual and Authentic to Your Style

Engagement sessions are an incredible opportunity for couples to express their unique style and capture the essence of their relationship. To ensure that your session remains casual and authentic, here are some tips to consider:

1. Choose a meaningful location

Select a location that holds significance for you as a couple. Whether it's the park where you had your first date or your favorite coffee shop downtown, an intimate setting will help create a relaxed atmosphere and genuine emotions. Avoid overly staged or conventional locations, and opt for places that truly reflect your personalities and relationship.

2. Dress comfortably yet stylishly

To convey a sense of authenticity, dress comfortably in outfits that reflect your personal style. Choose clothes that make you feel confident and showcase your unique personalities. Coordinate your outfits, ensuring they complement each other without being too matchy-matchy. Keep in mind that comfortable clothing will allow you to relax and be more natural during the session.

3. Incorporate personal items or hobbies

To add that personal touch, consider incorporating items or activities that are meaningful to you as a couple. If you love cooking together, bring some props from your kitchen. If you enjoy hiking, plan a session in the great outdoors. These elements will not only enhance the authenticity of the shoot but also create a genuine narrative of who you are as a couple.

4. Focus on moments, not poses

Instead of fixating on perfect poses, let your photographer capture the genuine moments between you as a couple. Engage in activities you love, like playing a board game or going for a walk. Interact naturally with each other, allowing your connection and emotions to shine through. Remember, it's these candid moments that truly capture your unique love story.

5. Trust your photographer

One of the vital factors in keeping your engagement session authentic is to trust your photographer. Find someone whose style aligns with your vision and let them guide you through the process. A skilled photographer will have a keen eye for capturing genuine moments and making you feel comfortable. Communicate your vision and collaborate with them, as they'll have valuable insights to guide you towards the most authentic shots.

6. Be yourself and have fun

Above all, be yourselves and embrace the moment. Let go of any expectations and enjoy the experience together. Laugh, cuddle, and share intimate moments, allowing your photographer to capture the magic. Embracing your authenticity and having fun will result in genuine, heartfelt photos that will be treasured for a lifetime.
Remember, the key to a successful engagement session lies in showcasing your love story as authentically as possible. By choosing a meaningful location, dressing comfortably, incorporating personal elements, focusing on genuine moments, trusting your photographer, and being true to yourselves, you'll create a casual and authentic session that perfectly captures your unique style.
